NORTH SHORE COMMUNITY COLLEGE GREENHOUSE

In the fall of 2018, a 1,200-square-foot greenhouse opened on the Lynn campus of North Shore Community College. This unique project was funded by a Massachusetts Skills Capital Grant, and creates a unique partnership between The Food Project and the college to learn and grow together.

The fully-equipped greenhouse includes planting beds, irrigation, lighting and heating systems, aquaponics, rain catchment, composting, sorting tables, and lab test kits. This space supports the college’s Agriculture and Food Services career pathways and allows students in horticulture, culinary arts, STEM, early child education, and other programs to conduct lab experiments, to grow and experiment with specialty vegetables, and more. Space in front of the greenhouse will be dedicated to community gardeners.

The greenhouse will also support The Food Project by providing additional growing space, creating hands-on learning opportunities for Dirt Crew and Root Crew, and supporting the Lynn Grows initiative.Â
