Individual Volunteer Opportunities

The Food Project currently offers the following volunteer opportunities for individuals.

The Food Project Farms

The Food Project grows food on 31 acres of land in Lincoln, 9 acres in Beverly, 2.5 acres in Boston, and 1 acre in Lynn. Volunteering on one of our farms involves planting, tending, and harvesting fresh vegetables. No prior knowledge of farming or gardening is necessary.

Our fall volunteer season ended on November 5. We will be welcoming volunteers again in the spring season. We will work with individual volunteers in the spring (April-June) at all of our farms:

Beverly - Tuesdays and Thursdays, 9:30-12:30, and Saturdays, 9:45-12:30 Directions
Boston - Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays, 9:30-12:30 Directions
Lincoln - Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays from April through June 9; Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays from June 11 through June 27, 9:30-12:30 Directions
Lynn - Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays, 9:30-12:30 Directions

We prefer working with individuals who can make a weekly commitment. However, even if you have less availability, we welcome you to join and work with us when you can.

In order to become an individual farm volunteer, please complete the online registration form and e-mail participate@thefoodproject.org with your name and availability. On the day that you’re volunteering, our farmers will meet you on the land. Please bring a water bottle and gardening gloves if you prefer to work with them. We recommend closed-toe shoes and clothes that can get dirty or wet.

Here is a list of frequently asked questions about volunteering with The Food Project. If you have any other questions about being an individual farm volunteer, please e-mail participate@thefoodproject.org.

Please note: We will not be working with volunteers on the Saturday of Memorial Day Weekend (5/26) except for at our farm in Lincoln.

Build-a-Garden

The Food Project’s Build-a-Garden program is designed to provide greater access to healthy foods to the underserved communities of Boston and Lynn. Through our Build-a-Garden program we provide residents with the necessary tools and support to grow their own food by building them raised beds.

Volunteers are needed in Boston to help build raised beds, which is an invigorating and labor intense project. The work entails shoveling compost into crates, loading the crates into a Food Project vehicle, and being driven by TFP staff to the garden site. At the site, volunteers assemble an 8-foot by 4-foot wooden bed and fill the frame with the compost. Volunteers must be able to lift 30+ pounds and be comfortable with getting  dirty.

Building sessions last approximately 4 hours and take place on weekdays and occasional weekends. Here is one date we need help, although other dates will also become available:

Tuesday, November 15th from 9:00-1:00

To volunteer on this date, or to be added to the Build-a-Garden email list to hear about other dates, please email participate@thefoodproject.org.

One-time and last minute volunteer opportunities

Occasionally The Food Project has one-time and last minute volunteer opportunities. To receive emails about these opportunities, please e-mail participate@thefoodproject.org and your e-mail will be added to the list.
