The Food Project’s November Market took place in our Dudley Greenhouse in Roxbury on Tuesday, November 22. From 4 to 7 p.m., friends and neighbors came to the greenhouse to buy a variety of root vegetables and greens to enrich their Thanksgiving dinners and to store away for colder days.

Along with the last field vegetables of the year, TFP youth handed out samples of their own Butternut squash soup with croutons, prepared specially for the event. While adults shopped for vegetables, other TFP youth interns led children in special activities around the greenhouse, such as a vegetable scavenger hunt, a potato digging bonanza, herb taste testing, and a lively game of pin the tail feather on the turkey.

Community Welcomes Return of Dudley Market

The following blog was written by Megan Gallagher, TFP's summer communications intern. A rising junior at Boston University, Megan has also been helping out at our Dudley Farmers' Market. The market is open every Tuesday and Thursday , 3 - 7 p.m., until October 27.

The scene is lively at the Dudley Farmers' Market!

Our big blue van pulled up to Dudley Town Common and I didn’t see a farmers’ market. I had envisioned several venders, each selling a variety of products but upon our arrival I realized that we, exclusively, would be today’s farmers' market.

Request for Proposals from Boston Partners

Following a successful pilot program last summer, The Food Project is excited to release a call for proposals for our 2011 Farm Fresh Coupon Program. Through this effort, we will partner with other Boston agencies to promote the consumption of fresh, healthy, local, affordable food with coupons that are redeemable for fresh fruits and vegetables at local farmers' markets. The distribution of these coupons will be paired with partner agencies' existing health-related activities to create a holistic approach to health, nutrition and well-being in underserved communities.

The Food Project is requesting responses no later than 5:00 PM on Friday, May 20th, 2011. Please help us to get the word out by sharing this RFP with your peers and colleagues. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact the program coordinator, Max Gitlen, at mgitlen@thefoodproject.org.

SNAP & Bounty Bucks Use in Boston Up in 2010

Preliminary results from a Food Project study show that our efforts to increase access to healthy food for underserved communities are making a big impact. In 2010, over $38,000 in SNAP sales were completed in farmers’ markets, with an additional $33,000 in redemption of Boston Bounty Bucks. Combining SNAP sales and Boston Bounty Bucks redemption, we’re projecting a final total of about $75,000 – representing a 271 percent increase from 2009 numbers! And more great news: the number of participating markets went up by 50 percent, from 14 to 21.
