What is the Summer Youth Program?

The Summer Youth Program (SYP) is a six-and-a-half-week long program for youth in Greater Boston and the North Shore of eastern Massachusetts. Each year, over 100 youth work together to grow and distribute thousands of pounds of organic produce while learning important leadership, teamwork, diversity, and civic participation skills.

Who is eligible to participate?

Youth aged 14-17 are eligible to participate in SYP. Applicants must be 14 by January 1, 2012 and have completed 8th grade – no exceptions. In addition, applicants must turn not 18 before August 15, 2012. Youth who live in and around the communities we serve are encouraged to participate!

What is the work like?

Every day is a little different. SYP participants will farm on suburban and urban land (weeding, harvesting, washing, planting), sell produce at farmers' markets, prepare and serve lunches at hunger relief organizations, and prepare community lunches where neighbors, youth, and staff come together to share the harvest. Each day is a mix of field work, games, workshops, and community-building activities.

How long is the work day?

The work day is from 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. Youth must bring a lunch to work.

What are the dates of the program?

The Greater Boston SYP will run from July 2, 2012 through August 15, 2012.

The North Shore SYP will run from July 2, 2012 through August 16, 2012.

Participants must be able to attend all six and a half weeks of the program.

How much are youth paid?

The stipend is $200 per week before taxes. Youth also earn community service hours for the time they spend at hunger relief organizations.

How do youth get there?

All of our programs are designed around the MBTA – our land and offices are accessible by public transportation. Transportation passes will be provided for commutes.

What should I wear for work?

Youth should be ready to get dirty! We work in all kinds of weather, including rain. It is important to dress comfortably for the temperature, and close-toed shoes are mandatory.
