On Tuesday morning, 34 eager teenagers gathered at The Food Project's farm in Lincoln, Mass., to start their summer. These teenagers are The Food Project's summer interns -- our most experienced youth staff members. They have all gone through the Summer Youth Program, and many continued to work with TFP through the Academic Year Program. They are well-versed in all areas of TFP programming and are experienced leaders and facilitators.

The summer interns are divided into groups, each specializing on certain parts of The Food Project's operations. Nine of the thirty-four interns this summer will work at TFP's farm in Lincoln, Mass. These nine interns are agriculture specialists: they will be the point people for food production and distribution at the farm, and will collaborate with the farm staff to deliver sustainable agriculture workshops for youth in the Summer Youth Program.

Eight of the thirty-four interns will work at The Food Project's office, farm, and greenhouse in Boston. These interns will work at the Dudley Town Common farmers' market; aid with production and distribution in the Dudley Greenhouse; assist with gardening and cooking workshops; and lead educational programming for local school and community groups.

Twelve of the interns will work at The Food Project's farms on the North Shore of eastern Massachusetts. They will be agriculture experts at the Moraine farm in Beverly; they will distribute produce at TFP's CSAs and farmers' markets in Lynn and Beverly; and they will facilitate workshops for participants in the Summer Youth Program.

The final five interns will work closely with Intern Program Manager John Wang at all of The Food Project's sites. They will lead multicultural and anti-oppression workshops for participants in the Summer Youth Program. These workshops will focus on cultural sharing, breaking down stereotypes, and recognizing oppression. In addition, they will lead food systems and food justice workshops for community groups, and will represent The Food Project at regional and national conferences.

The youth interns are an integral part of The Food Project's operations during the summer months. They are challenged to take ownership over their work and to serve as leaders within The Food Project and in their communities. Furthermore, they serve as role models for the teenagers in the Summer Youth Program, who are experiencing their first summer with The Food Project.
