Lincoln Land We're now hiring two positions for the 2010 growing season, and an exciting year-round position.
Both of the seasonal positions are for Grower's Assistants on our Lincoln land, and one of the positions will also involve supervising TFP interns.
Our other opening is for the Director of our North Shore site.

What: CSA Fall Celebration!
Where: Long Hill Reservation, 572 Essex St., Beverly
When: October 17, 12:00 - 2:00 PM
Please join us for a state-of-the-farm tour and potluck lunch on October 17. This will be a great opportunity to meet and hear from the staff, youth, and other members that make up the community of our community supported agriculture program. We will provide salad, dessert, and the opportunity to press as many apples as you like into fresh, delicious cider. This is a kid-friendly event, and will be a lot of fun.
If you would like to attend, please RSVP by October 13.

Do you remember the rain in June? While the weather of spring and early summer may fade in our minds, its effects are still being felt on the farm, especially at harvest time. Record rainfall and low temperatures in June and July led Governor Patrick and members of the Massachusetts delegation to ask federal officials to declare much of the state an agricultural disaster zone, citing tens of millions of dollars in expected income losses. As a Community Supported Agriculture program, we have asked you, the share holders, to take on the risk of the farming season with us and this year, more than any other, you have felt the losses with the demise of our tomato crop by the moisture-loving late blight. Thank you.

Crew E Hien Vu came to The Food Project looking for a summer job, and he left as a leader.
Hien, a 16-year-old Vietnamese boy from Roxbury, was not the sort of kid that you might peg as a go-getter. He was well intentioned and had a lot of potential. He also had a “too cool for school” attitude,
This summer, through hard, meaningful work in a supportive environment, Hien revealed a new side of his personality. He grew into a natural leader within his crew, keeping the group on track when friendly competition and games threatened to boil over. He began to express himself more, bringing in his family’s traditional foods to share with his peers.
By the end of the summer, he was stretching in ways no one expected. Hien gave a moving speech before a crowd of 200 at the end-of-summer Family Feast, explaining the ways in which his adult mentors at The Food Project came to serve as role models for him, in the absence of a consistent father figure.

I’ve been getting a little compulsive about fish tacos of late and have tried to pair our cabbage, cilantro, and hot peppers with a keeper striper…no luck yet on the striper, but the fish tacos have been great. Here are a few ideas, including an article about fish tacos that was in the Globe a couple weeks ago. The epicurious recipe is really nice and simple once you get the hang of it.

This week we officially shift over to fall. We're at the tipping point where the days become shorter than the nights; where we spend more time inside than out on the farm. This is the time of the Harvest Moon (actually next week's full moon) when the moon rises large and orange close to sunset, traditionally allowing farmers to continue bringing in the harvest by moonlight. We won't be taking advantage of that astrological occurrence.

selection from tomato field panorama The Food Project is the lucky recipient of a GigaPan robotic panorama-producing system, generously provided together with training by Fine Outreach for Science. The GigaPan system can produce extremely large, detailed panoramas that can easily be examined through their website -- you can take in the whole scene, or zoom in to inspect which tomatoes are affected by the blight and which are still fine.
While there was a bit of a learning curve learning how to operate the GigaPan, we succeeded in producing our first panorama worth sharing last month: a scene from the on-farm U Pick tomato fields of our CSA. More to come!

On Monday, October 5th at 7:00 PM Belmont World Film will present an evening of films about sustainable food at the Studio Cinema in Belmont (376 Trapelo Road). The evening’s headline film, HOMEGROWN, features the Dervaes family, who turned their 1/5 of an acre yard (front and back) in urban Pasadena, CA into a farm producing 6000 pounds of produce a year. Family patriarch Jules Dervaes will speak after the film via satellite. The evening’s other films include HOT BREAD KITCHEN and VIVE LA FOOD.
You may have seen the Dervaes family on Oprah, CBS News, and elsewhere demonstrating their innovative and uncompromising homesteading methods. They even make their own biodiesel, grind their own flour using pedal power, and produce 80% of what they eat.
